The Sadies
The Sadies
Without doubt or qualification, The Sadies are one of this continent’s greatest extant rock ’n’ roll bands — just as they have been for the last quarter-century. Versatile and imaginative, they skip from astral psychedelia to shuffling bucolics and leap from puckish pop to righteous garage-rock without losing momentum or mastery. They’ve worked with a veritable roots-rock hall of fame, whether backing Neko Case for years, supporting Neil Young during a tribute to The Band, or joining X’s Jon Doe or Jon Spencer for full-length collaborations. But their albums deliver masterclasses on pointed songwriting, lockstep harmonies, and a devil-may-care attitude to expectations and past successes. Perhaps that’s why Northern Passages, released in 2017, ranks not only as their best work but as one of this decade’s most sophisticated surveys of rock ’n’ roll. Not bad when you’ve long been one of the world’s best bands.
Walrus
Walrus
Walrus is comprised of four members channeling their inner psychedelia, with songs that range from trance to surf. Their music will adhere to all levels of inebriation or consciousness. Walrus takes you swiftly into a dream you’ll fnd yourself never wanting to wake up from. Goo goo ga’joob. “The band somehow mix gentle, Brian Wilson vocal melodies and orchestrations with out-of-the- blue punk thrash parts that keep listeners guessing. The high, winsome vocals and chiming 12- string Rickenbacker certainly conjured late ‘60s cloudy folk-pop, but the rest of the band infused the songs with sharp edges. Some of it recalled the Sadies, and the musicians in Walrus are certainly in the same league.” — Vish Khanna, Exclaim!
